Meet the

sowell sisters

Betty Mote and Nancy Hatfield were the daughters of John and Lora Sowell.  Both girls literally grew up in their parents’ furniture store on Arch Street and began working in the store when they were about 12 years old.

The daughters went to Searcy schools. Each then graduated from Harding College, Betty with a business degree and Nancy with a degree in Home Economics.  Each of the girls married after college and then moved away from Searcy due to their husbands’ careers.  The daughters returned to Searcy with their families and again due to their husband’s careers. Betty’s husband, Jerry Mote began his Harding College Bison football coaching career in 1964.   Nancy and her family returned to Searcy in 1984 for her husband, Dr. David Hatfield, to begin his medical practice in Searcy.

Betty (shown on the left) worked at Sowell’s for over thirty-five years and was well known for her love and dedication to Sowell’s.  She was also very dedicated to her customers in helping them make the right choices and getting the most for their budget.  In 1996, she was recognized by the City of Searcy as Business Woman of the Year.  Though officially retired, Betty enjoys dropping in to see what’s new at Sowell’s or to help us celebrate an occasion AND we are glad she does!

Nancy (shown on the right), the younger daughter of the Sowell’s, has also grown up in the family business. For over 30 years, Nancy has operated her own interior design business and is an ASID, Allied Member. She partners with her sister, Betty, as co-owners of Sowell’s.  Along with managing Sowell’s, Nancy continues to offer design consultation to customers with either their residential or commercial needs. Whether helping her customers find just the right furniture piece or accessorize a room, she enjoys the process and is a master of keeping up with the details. Finishing a room and having a happy customer are the things that Nancy enjoys most about being at Sowell’s!

Our story

Our motto: “Everything in Furniture!”

In l945, John M. and Lora Sowell began a business specializing in selling used wooden ice boxes. Obtaining new merchandise during this wartime era was near to impossible. To keep up with the demand, John made monthly trips to St. Louis and Chicago to bring back those items and whatever else was available. Eventually he found a market in Chicago selling new items, thus the real beginning of Sowell’s Home Supply, now Sowell’s Furniture, Inc.
